The art of writing involves choosing the plot, the setting or the characters. While some writers prefer to write under one particular genre, others go ahead and broaden their horizons with more than one particular genre.
Depending on what genre or genres you prefer to write under, one of things most writers should avoid is repetition. Follow the same writing formula you use but a plot should not be similar to a previous one, otherwise your stories will simply be seen as predictable. And there are writers who suffer from the agony of not knowing what to write about but want to avoid later accusations of plagiarism. Here’s the ways you can get fresh ideas for a book.
Newspapers and Magazines. Particularly the Metro and Crime section, you can find articles that may not be important to people and turn it into a story. It may not be completely based on the article in question but merely inspired by it. Best way to go about it is add other details not found in the newspaper and add or eliminate characters.
Find out What People Want . Do a thorough research by seeking out what people, including people you know, would like to read about or what genre they feel is missing in the country’s Literature. It could be done under the guise of casual questions or a survey poll.
Your Own Experience. A fresh idea is not limited to other people’s experiences; it could be from your own. Write about a particular time of your life is a good idea, adding a few fictional details if you wish. If you happen to be the type to keep a daily diary or an adventurous traveller, it’s a great start.
Real life Issues. The world is full with heartbreaking societal issues, from terrorism to poverty, from domestic violence to human trafficking. You can write an original story, with one of such issues- particularly one you are very angry about- being the main theme. Your story could also be a means of finding a solution to a particular problem.
Write about a person you admire . Such person could be someone who left a lasting impact in your life or a national hero. Write about his or her life in your own perspective and why he or she deserves your literary tribute.
The above ideas are ways of thinking outside the box and before you know it, you’ll never stop writing or be at a loss of WHAT to write at all. Go for it now.
